Fed: Former PM Whitlam first to sign up for brain bank

CANBERRA, April 11 AAP - Former prime minister Gough Whitlam initially had misgivingsabout becoming the first person to donate his brain to a Sydney University brain bank.

"People will say isn't (that) just the thing that you'd expect from Whitlam, he thinksthat his brain is of outstanding value and it will be an inspiration to future generations, when I go ..." Mr Whitlam said on ABC radio.

The brain bank is the work of researchers who hope to use the organs to find curesfor degenerative disease, depression and Parkinson's, as well as other illnesses.

Others who have been approached to donate their brains include radio host Amanda Kellerand the former Sydney University chancellor Dame Leonie Kramer.

The public is also encouraged to sign up.

Dame Leonie has not yet signed herself up as a donor because she believes it is a decisionto be made by her family.

"I could say right now `yes you can have my brain for what it's worth', but seriously, the need for this project is undeniable, the potential benefits to the community at largeare also undeniable," Dame Leonie said on ABC radio.
