Fed: Federal Govt pledges worldwide hunt for people smuggler

The Federal Government has reportedly pledged a worldwide hunt for the people-smugglerblamed for hundreds of deaths after an unseaworthy ship sunk last year.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that ABU QUASSEY, an Egyptian national, is accusedof orchestrating the doomed SIEV-X voyage, which cost 353 lives, when it sank off Indonesiain October last year.

He is due to walk free from a Jakarta jail on Wednesday after four failed attemptsto bring him to Australia to face charges.

Federal Justice Minister, CHRIS ELLISON, says Australia is helpless to prevent therelease but will continue its pursuit of him.

Senator ELLISON says Australia has issued a red alert through Interpol to more than170 countries to track QUASSEY's movements once he is released.
